Dear Friend,

Thank you to all the GDA vendors that came out and made the St. Louis Earth Day Festival another successful event! And a special thanks to our members that donated food to feed our volunteers! This month we are recognizing Old Bakery Beer Co. for their sustainable achievements, heading to south city for the next STL Green Drinks at a pizzeria and trattoria whose name is Italian for "honest", and celebrating some new GDA members and recertifications. With Pride month a few days away please let me know if you are a LGBTQIA+ owned business that would like to be featured in our social media spotlights. Thank you!

Grant Funding for Composting

Financial Support for Composting

If you have been GDA certified within the last 16 months, you will qualify to start receiving $20 off/month ($240/year) on your composting service bill. The funding will be accessible for 1 year and will need to be applied for each year. If you are currently paying a compost service to pick up your food scraps and would like to receive the financial support for composting, please click the link below to fill out the application form.

If you are not currently composting, this is a great opportunity to give it a try. Two services we recommend are Total Organics and New Earth Farm. If you have a smaller food scraps footprint, I would recommend New Earth Farm which offers 4-gallon bucket pickup options in addition to their larger tote pickup options.

Keeping food waste out of the landfill yields huge environmental benefits. When food waste is dumped into landfills it creates a lot of methane gas which is a big contributor to forced climate transformation. Composted food scraps are transformed into healthy viable soil for gardens. Another benefit is that your landfill footprint should decrease allowing you to re-evaluate the size and frequency of landfill pickups which should reduce costs.

Thank You To Our GDA Members For Donating Food!

Alpha Brewing Co.

Once an old textile mill, the brewery has made several sustainable upgrades and showcases one of the best patios on the Morganford strip. The interior features repurposed iron gate posts as tap handles, reclaimed wood, a repurposed mailbox which houses the growing network of the Sipster Club, and art pieces by local artist Richard Thayer. With a background in science and a chance opportunity to brew beer at Square One Brewery, owner, Derrick Langeneckert, opened his own unique brewery specializing in sour beers, barrel aged beers, and many other innovative beer styles. Alpha’s love for beer and science has manifested efficient and sustainability driven business practices to help it be a standout success in the St. Louis craft beer scene. O'Connell's Pub
O'C is a revered St. Louis institution located at Kingshighway and Shaw nestled between The Hill and our friends at EarthWays Center. There's a lot of history here including a pair of charming 1904 World's Fair chandeliers that greet you as you enter the nostalgic pub where the lighting is set low and the decor is likely older than you. The pub features LED lighting, recycling, hyperlocal sourcing from Pete's Bakery on The Hill and whole chickens from Buttonwood Farms. John Parker Jr. has taken the reigns of O'Connell's Pub and has ambitious plans to reduce its carbon footprint by implementing composting, solar panels, and intuitive wind turbines. Grab a pint of beer from a local brewery or one of the best tasting Guinness's in STL and catch a live jazz show featuring some of the most talented musicians in town! Click here to read more about their certification.
