Dear GDA Member,

My name is Gillian Garland and I am the new Program Manager for the Green Dining Alliance with earthday365. I am very excited to be a part of earthday365 and I cannot wait to meet each and every one of you over the next few months. You may have seen mention of a new manager in the earthday365 newsletter that went out last week- that's me!

A little bit about me- I have worked in the restaurant industry off and on for around 7 years. I have worked a range of positions from dishwasher to bartending. I also have a BS in sustainability from Maryville University. I believe that combining both of these experiences will allow me to serve you, our members, and the rest of the St. Louis sustainability community better.

Due to the vacancy of this position spanning months, I am working tirelessly through our membership list to assure that the Green Dining Alliance is recertifying all of the businesses in a timely manner. Please feel free to reach out to me personally via email to set up a meeting so we can meet and chat about how GDA has helped your establishment become more sustainable.

- Gillian Garland (Program Manager)

The 2024 St. Louis Earth Day Festival

Thank You Vendors!

The 2024 Earth Day festival would not have been as big of a hit if it was not for you. We had around 19 different food/beverage vendors in the Earth Day Cafe and the Beer Garden. I look forward to increasing that number next year.

Too Good To Waste

Showcase Your Restaurant in Sauce Magazine

We created the Too Good To Waste marketing campaign, featured in Sauce Magazine, to show what the average amount of food wasted by an individual each year looks like. It provides an accessible way to communicate the issue of food waste to our region while showcasing some of our GDA members.

Big shout out to the GDA members that participated so far. Click here for more information and email Gillian@earthday-365.org if you'd like to participate in the 2024 campaign.

Current GDA Grants

Composting Grant

We have a composting grant sponsored by the St. Louis Jefferson Solid Waste Management District and the TRIO Foundation that allows us to provide members of the GDA with $20/month ($240/year) off of their composting services. If you're interested in participating, contact Gillian for more information.

This grant helps end single-use plastics

GDA members have access to a $500 reimbursement grant from the EPA to replace disposable plastic products with more environmentally friendly alternatives. These grants are first come, first served until all funds have been distributed.

If you're interested please contact Gillian@earthday-365.org.

Ditch the styrofoam with this Grant!

With the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative, we are working for the neighborhoods located in three geographic regions in St. Louis shown in the map to the left (Baden, Dutchtown/Cherokee, and Delmar through downtown- "the toothbrush"). The grant offers businesses a $1000 reimbursement to replace Styrofoam or disposable plastic products with recyclable, compostable, or reusable materials to reduce the environmental impacts of litter in our neighborhoods and waterways. Any food businesses within the grant boundaries can apply for the grant by completing the form linked below and sending it to Gillian@earthday-365.org.

Free Membership Opportunity

Do you know a business that is interested in joining the GDA but has financial barriers preventing them getting certified? Our friends at StraightUp Solar have been generous enough to provide local BIPOC and immigrant owned businesses a sponsorship to cover the cost of joining the GDA. These sponsorships are first come, first served until all funds have been distributed. If interested, please contact Gillian for more information.

Webster Groves Passes Funding to Support Restaurants

How They Are Doing It

To support area restaurants in lowering their environmental impact, the City of Webster Groves is awarding microgrants to food service establishments that get certified with the Green Dining Alliance. All food service establishments that are GDA certified in Webster Groves are eligible for one or both of the grants. Microgrants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. The grant funds can be used to cover the cost of the GDA certification.

Reduce $1000

Helps cover baseline steps such as eliminating Styrofoam, utilizing recycling and composting, and switching to compostable or reusable to-go ware.

Recharge $3000

Helps offset the high cost of energy improvements such as installing energy efficient lighting and Energy Star equipment, electrifying the kitchen, and installing EV charging stations.

If you know of a restaurant in Webster Groves that would be interested in getting GDA certified please share this information with them.

Thank you to our Sponsors!
