Dear GDA Member,

I am excited to introduce a new level of membership within the Green Dining Alliance to honor those members who really go above and beyond to be sustainable - Food Waste Champions! See below for more details.

My first month as the Green Dining Alliance program manager has been very busy to say the least. The team at earthday365 have been amazing at getting me up to speed and I have already been able to chat with several GDA members. We have some other things in the works that I am excited to share with you all soon.

Please feel free to reach out to me personally via email to set up a meeting to chat about how the GDA can bring resources to help you save money while becoming more sustainable.

- Gillian Garland (Program Manager)

πŸ†Become a Green Dining Champion

Save money with less food waste πŸ’°

The members who go above and beyond will now have the opportunity to receive more benefits from their GDA membership.

We're excited to announce that earthday365 just received a $100,000 grant from ReFED, a national food waste nonprofit, to create a special new track within GDA - the Food Waste Champions. Restaurants who sign up will get lots of benefits and support to reduce their food waste while saving big $$.

Food Waste Champion restaurants will receive double the composting subsidy (a total of $480/year). In addition, the GDA will provide food waste coaching, external trainings for your kitchen staff, access to tracking methods for food and cost savings, and customized signage throughout the year to help each restaurant conquer their unique challenges.

Contact Gillian for more details or to let us know you're ready to be a Food Waste Champion!

Donate, Don't Waste

This month the Green Dining Alliance program assistant, Charlie, has been hard at work updating our list of food donation resources on the GDA website. I want to note we have a new addition to that list, All Hands On Deck. All Hands on Deck is designed for donations of smaller amounts of prepared foods (unlike food banks) and has an easy-to-use text-based system that gets food to drop points in food insecure neighborhoods quickly. πŸš―

Donating wholesome food for human consumption diverts food waste from landfills and puts food on the table for families in need. Donations of nonperishable and unspoiled perishable food from homes and businesses help stock the shelves at food banks, soup kitchens, pantries, and shelters.

Available GDA Grants

Composting Grant

We have a composting grant sponsored by the St. Louis Jefferson Solid Waste Management District and the TRIO Foundation that allows us to provide members of the GDA with $20/month ($240/year) off of their composting services. If you're interested in participating, contact Gillian for more information.

This grant helps end single-use plastics

GDA members have access to a $500 reimbursement grant from the EPA to replace disposable plastic products with more environmentally friendly alternatives. These grants are first come, first served until all funds have been distributed.

If you're interested please contact Gillian@earthday-365.org.

Ditch the styrofoam with this Grant!

With the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative, we are working for the neighborhoods located in three geographic regions in St. Louis shown in the map to the left (Baden, Dutchtown/Cherokee, and Delmar through downtown- "the toothbrush"). The grant offers businesses a $1000 reimbursement to replace Styrofoam or disposable plastic products with recyclable, compostable, or reusable materials to reduce the environmental impacts of litter in our neighborhoods and waterways. Any food businesses within the grant boundaries can apply for the grant by completing the form linked below and sending it to Gillian@earthday-365.org.

Free Membership Opportunity

Do you know a business that is interested in joining the GDA but has financial barriers preventing them getting certified? Our friends at StraightUp Solar have been generous enough to provide local BIPOC and immigrant owned businesses a sponsorship to cover the cost of joining the GDA. These sponsorships are first come, first served until all funds have been distributed. If interested, please contact Gillian for more information.

New GDA Member!

Welcome Sugarwitch!

Last week, Gillian and Charlie met with the Sugarwitch team to perform their introductory audit. Sugarwitch's sourcing methods, food waste reduction strategies, and vegetarian menu helped them pass with flying colors awarding them a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ rating!

Thank you to our Sponsors!
