Dear Friend,

We welcome Charlie Hall in a part-time position to the GDA team! We've included an inspiring sustainable good news story in this edition. Do you have a story you'd like to share? Let us know! Folks in the sustainability industry are always eager to share their knowledge with anyone who will listen. The young friends board for earthday365 is recruiting new members, so please forward this to any of your employees that are passionate about being sustainable. Today, STL Green Drinks heads to one St. Louis's oldest most iconic pubs!

- Ben Daugherty (GDA Program Manager)

Welcome Charlie Hall, our new Green Dining Alliance Assistant! Previously our GDA intern, Charlie has always loved gardening and cooking and has been involved with helping restaurants become more sustainable since after college. He'll be assisting the GDA Manager with member audit reports, creating customizable signage for waste diversion bins at newly recertified GDA establishments, making resource tool kits for training restaurant employees, and adding helpful information to the GDA website!

Grant Funding for Composting

GDA Composting Rebate Program

JULY STATS:

GDA participants: 24 (and growing)

Food waste diverted from landfills: 51,461 lbs

Co2 Emissions Equivalent: taking 6 cars off the road

If you have been GDA certified within the last 16 months, you will qualify to start receiving $20 off/month ($240/year) on your composting service bill.

Keeping food waste out of the landfill yields huge environmental benefits. When food waste is dumped into landfills it creates a lot of methane gas which is a big contributor to forced climate transformation. Composted food scraps are transformed into healthy viable soil for gardens. Another benefit is that your landfill footprint should decrease allowing you to re-evaluate the size and frequency of landfill pickups which should reduce costs.

Sustainable Good News Stories

Kerry (Ireland) Aims to Be First Town Free From Single Use Coffee Cups

By implementing the reusable 2GoCup, the Killarney Coffee Cup Project hopes to remove over one million single-use coffee cups from its town each year which equates to 8.5 tons of waste. The refundable deposit is about $2 which is credited back upon return. 25 local coffee shops and 21 hotels are taking part in the project. Single-use coffee cups are typically never recyclable, and some are certified compostable. Something that we use for an hour shouldn't be in our landfills or water streams for 30+ years. Programs like this aren't perfect. Opting for a reusable cup made from a renewable resource like bamboo such as the habit cup would be more enticing than the plastic 2GoCup. However, the 2GoCups are reused hundreds of times and will greatly reduce the carbon footprint of single use coffee cups. Other reusable cup programs like Happy Habbit Program and the US's R.Cup are also gaining popularity. As consumers become more receptive to this concept, it is likely this will become the norm. That's good news!
